New Coach Is Tough On The Team

An article in the Edmonton Journal revealed new head coach Pat Quinn is a harder coach to play for than the former softy, Craig MacTavish. Players are now required to put in more time at practice and attend more team meetings.

"He's hard on us, but that's what we need. He's trying to make us a better team," said defenceman Ladislav Smid. "He doesn't want us to get satisfied."

It seems to be paying off. The Oil came back from a 4-1 deficit against the Columbus Blue Jackets to win 6-4.

Tonight we play the Calgary Flames in Calgary. Let's go OILERS!

First Week Summary

Okay, it's the first week of the regular season and our boys are doing pretty well! Our season opener was a little disappointing against Calgary. Packed house (16,839) at Rexall Place and we were outscored by the Flames 4-3 in regulation time.

We made it 1 and 1 on Tuesday the 6th, but lost again to Calgary this time in OT, 4-3. Last night against the Habs, we got some redemption with a win, 3-2, in regulation.

Not all teams in the league have Thanksgiving off, but the Oilers do. They resume tomorrow night against the Nashville Predators.

The oilers will be getting a new arena. We just don't know where exactly. Downtown for sure. It will be bigger than Rexall to allow for more seating, and it will be comfortable, will have easy access to amenities, more luxurious suites and more of them. It's looking at costing around $450 million. A new arena cannot be built, however, until an outstanding $30 million loan is paid in full.

The event was a sold out ticket. It started by a woman from Cirque Eloise with her amazing acrobatic performance. Also accompanied by another acrobat that was flying and spinning into the air with a music from Celtic band. Next, there was a video presentation of past years highlights of the Oilers game.

After the opening presentation, they introduced each players into the ice for the first time in twenty years and also their names and hometown were mentioned.

The ceremony was concluded by our Alberta's Minister of Finance Iris Evans and Oilers President & CEO Patrick LaForge by dropping the puck to the ice.
